| These are questions we’ve been getting frequently, so let’s clear things up!
First, it’s Squrt (without the “i”). And no, it’s not a typo! A Squrt is a specialized fire apparatus that combines a traditional pumper with an articulating, telescoping water boom. Squrt is a brand name associated with certain fire apparatus manufacturers.
Our new apparatus is technically a Snozzle, a similar device manufactured by Pierce, part of the Oshkosh Corporation family. While the name may be different, the concept and operational advantages are much the same.
🚒 What makes it special?
Our Snozzle is mounted in the center of the truck, with the boom extending toward the front. In addition to delivering large volumes of water, it features a piercing nozzle and a heat-detecting camera.
The boom provides:
50 feet of vertical reach 35 feet of horizontal reach The ability to position the nozzle above, below, and around obstacles to deliver water where it’s needed most.
Unlike traditional aerial apparatus, the Snozzle does not have a bucket or platform and cannot carry personnel aloft. It is designed specifically for master-stream water delivery, giving firefighters another tool to tackle challenging fire conditions.
💪 Why does Lincoln Fire Company have one?
The Company purchased its current Squrt in 1992. Over the decades, we’ve learned just how valuable this type of apparatus can be. Here are three major advantages:
1️⃣ Operational versatility
The articulating boom allows us to maneuver up, around, and even under obstacles such as power lines. It can also be positioned at or below ground level, providing options that many traditional aerial devices cannot offer.
2️⃣ Maneuverability
Size matters! A relatively compact wheelbase allows us to navigate narrow streets, alleys, and other tight spaces where larger aerial apparatus may struggle to operate. That’s a significant advantage in a community with a mix of older buildings and confined access points.
3️⃣ Cost-effectiveness
Let’s face it: no fire truck is cheap! However, these specialized units generally have lower acquisition and maintenance costs than full-size aerial apparatus. That allows us to add valuable elevated water-delivery capabilities without the expense of a traditional aerial truck.
🔥 What's next for Squrt 16?
In December 2022, following a year of research and planning, Lincoln Fire Company made the decision to purchase a replacement apparatus. Our goal was to retain the capabilities that have served the Ephrata community so well while ensuring those capabilities remain available for years to come.
Although our new truck is technically a Snozzle, it will carry the designation Squrt 16, in accordance with Lancaster County's apparatus designation policy.
Different name. Modern technology. Same mission. 🚒
Squrt 16 has been serving our community since 1992, and we're looking forward to continuing that tradition with its replacement! |
