| While you've been out stocking up on milk and toilet paper, your neighbors at the Lincoln Fire Company have been making preparations as well. Throughout the storm, we will have volunteers at station to ensure that we are able to respond quickly and efficiently.
Please remember these storm safety tips:
- Avoid travel if you can. Not only does this reduce your chance of an accident, but it allows the snow plows to be efficient.
- Prepare to be "stuck" in your home for several days. Deep snow may make travel difficult so stock up on the necessary supplies and prepare to spend a few days at home with family.
- Keep your devices charged in case there is a power outage. If there is a power outage, remember to not run generators or other heaters indoors without proper ventilation. They generate carbon monoxide which can kill you.
- If you go outside, make sure you dress in layers to stay warm and dry.
- When shoveling, take it easy. Shovel multiple times to avoid having to shovel all 96 inches at once. Yes, we know 96 inches is an exaggeration, but it got your attention!
- Clear the area around your nearest fire hydrant! This allows us to actually be able to find and access it in case of an emergency. The extra time for us to locate the hydrant can be the difference between life and death. Even if it isn't on your front yard, it's going to be used if we come to your house.
- Help your neighbors and check on each other!
