Here are some patriotic facts for this occasion:

- The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. However, only two of the signers (John Hancock and Charles Thompson) actually signed the document on that day. The rest of the signatures were obtained on August 2, 1776.
- The names of those who signed the Declaration of Independence were kept secret for 6 months so they could avoid arrest and prosecution.
- On July 4, 1777 there was a celebration with fireworks in Philadelphia marking the one year anniversary. Firework celebrations have occurred annually across the country since then.
- On average there will be 150 million hot dogs consumed this weekend.
- There were roughly 2.5 million Americans on July 4, 1776. Today there is over 300 million.
- July 4th didn't become a federal holiday until 1870.

In all seriousness, we hope that every enjoys the weekend and remains safe. Don't blow off your fingers! If you are at the Ephrata Firework celebration tomorrow night, keep an eye out for our trucks and firefighters who are taking time away from their families to ensure the safety of our community.
